Job Title: Assistant General Secretary
Reports to: Associate General Secretary-DOM
Department: Division of Ordained Ministry
Schedule/Status: Monday-Friday; 8:00-4:30; Salaried-Exempt
Responsibilities: Provides administration for the programs of the DOM and shares supervisory responsibility with the Associate General Secretary. Guides the work of clergy formation for The United Methodist Church, including recruitment, candidacy, licensing, ordination, and clergy assessment. Provides ongoing direction and support for the conceptualization and implementation of systems of formation and development for all clergy.
Essential Job
Functions:
1. Assist the Associate General Secretary in the supervision of staff and program for the DOM to fulfill the mandates of the Discipline and the Strategic Plan.
2. Provide leadership and supervision as related to constituent relationships including, the BOM Staff Network, Directors of Clergy Excellence, Conference Relations Committees, and the Sexual Ethics Task Force.
3. Provide leadership and supervision for the United Methodist Endorsing Agency and the Center for Integrative Pastoral Practice.
4. Direct the development and implementation of Effective Ministry 360 (EM360) for The United Methodist Church.
5. Oversee training and development for dCOMs, BOMs, DS’s, mentors, Orders and Fellowship, and other conference leaders for their preparation and selection of persons for set-apart ministry.
6. Lead in the preparation and coordination of strategy and legislative matters for General Conference. Provide consultation and disciplinary interpretation to GBHEM staff.
7. Oversee and provide consultation and disciplinary interpretation to Bishops, District Superintendents, BOM officers and staff, etc. to help inform clergy formation and conference relations processes and decisions.
8. Participate in ecumenical dialogues on clergy recruitment and retention to learn from others and to share common concerns.
9. Perform other tasks, including functions associated with implementation of the Strategic Plan, as assigned.
MajorAccountabilities:
1. Support for the effective administration of the DOM.
2. Overall management of assigned areas is handled efficiently and effectively.
3. Effective support is provided Bishops, Cabinets, BOM Staff and Officers in the process of educating and credentialing persons for commissioning, licensing, ordination, and conference relations.
4. Ensure that information, interpretation of disciplinary paragraphs, and DOM guidelines and recommendations are communicated professionally, accurately, and in a timely way.
Qualifications:
Seminary degree required; Master of Divinity strongly preferred.
Ordination in the UMC; In-depth knowledge of the UMC structure and polity; interpersonal, communication and public-speaking skills; organizational and management skills; previous supervisory experience; ability to write and edit preferred.
Computer skills in word processing a minimum; Microsoft Office Suite knowledge preferred; Book of Discipline knowledge, especially Chapter 2 – The Ministry of the Ordained.
At least four years’ experience in program direction and management; experience in local church ministry and work with conference BOMs preferred; demonstrated success in designing and implementing various types of training programs – both residential and online.
Supervision: Five (5) – Director of Young Adult Ministry-Discernment; Director of Endorsement; Director of CPE; Sr Specialist-Clergy Excellence; and Conference Relations Coordinator.
