Job Title: Associate General Secretary

Reports to: General Secretary

Department: Division of Ordained Ministry                                        

Schedule/Status: Monday-Friday; 8:00-4:30; Salaried-Exempt

Responsibilities:            

Oversees all functions of the Division of Ordained Ministry and serves as the executive officer for the Division; responsible for the vision and work of the Division.

Essential Job Functions:                        

1. Administers and supervises the daily operations of the DOM including visioning, supervision of staff, budget management, planning and evaluation of program.

2. Provides consultation and staff support for AUMTS including the promotion of MEF in order to fulfill DOM’s relationship with 13 UM seminaries in the US and ongoing support for Deans/Presidents.

3. Provides staff support for the work of the Commission on Theological Education to ensure adequate educational institutions are available for the training of UM seminary students.

4. Leads the Board and Division in the development of the strategic plan.

5. Shares in providing leadership of the GBHEM as a member of the executive staff; analyzes and responds to needs of the entire organization as a strategic partner and team member; offers regular input regarding plans for major initiatives in own area as well as other divisions/offices of the board, provides recommendations, fulfills assignments from the general secretary, and, when necessary, in consultation with other executive and program management staff, and makes sound business decisions in consultation with the general secretary and in accordance with the strategic goals and best interests of the GBHEM.

6. Provides coordination for issues related to theological education throughout the world.

7. Performs other duties, including tasks associated with implementation of the strategic plan, as assigned.

MajorAccountabilities:

1. Overall management of the Division of Ordained Ministry is handled efficiently and effectively.

2. Adequate support is provided to the Commission on Theological Education.

3. Participation in the development of the GBHEM strategic plan remains active and focuses on work that is critical to carrying out the Disciplinary mandates.

4. Budgets for DOM are maintained accurately and within required parameters.

5. Effective support is provided to the Course of Study Program, the Commission on Theological Education, and theological education throughout the world-wide connection.

Qualifications: Master of Divinity is required.

Ordination in the UMC; knowledge of the structure of the UMC; excellent communication skills; strong supervisory skills; strong consultative and cooperative leadership and management skills; strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically (visionary); strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; excellent written and oral communication skills; sensitivity to a diverse population:  culturally, racially, and theologically; ability to communicate and work with colleagues in a team approach.

Basic accounting knowledge; experience with financial analysis and budgeting.

Minimum four years’ experience as member of a Conference Board of Ordained Ministry; previous supervisory experience in either large church or non-profit agency

Supervision:  Six (6) - Assist GS-DOM, Exec Director-Clergy Lifelong Learning; Director-Specialized Theological Education; Administrative Supervisor-DOM; Sr Program Specialist-Theological Education; and Manager of Global Formation for New Spiritual Leaders.
